NIHL News

Blackburn Hawks have announced their recruitment of former Manchester Phoenix defenceman Luke Boothroyd who joins the club’s defensive unit alongside player-coach Steven Duncombe and long serving ‘D’ man Ollie Lomax. Starting out with Bradford’s junior setup in 2000, Boothroyd then progressed to the Elite League with the Hull Stingrays before switching to the Phoenix in 2008 where he remained for nine seasons, taking on the role of captaincy from his second campaign with the team. Having led the Phoenix for eight years in the EPL, Boothroyd offers both experience and leadership which suggests he will be an excellent addition to the Hawks’ growing roster.

Also adding to their line-up, Sheffield Steeldogs have confirmed the signing of defenceman Tom Barry who will head into his fifth season with the club when they ice in the new look NIHL from September. Having played six games for Sutton Sting last season, as well as icing with the Spartans and Senators in recent campaigns, Barry is no stranger to the NIHL and is another strong addition to Ben Morgan’s squad.

Blackburn Hawks’ player-coach Steven Duncombe has announced the signings of long-serving defenceman Ollie Lomax and forward James Riddoch. Set to serve a fifteenth season with the club in which he will no doubt assist Duncombe’s leadership of the Hawks following his captaincy in his last campaign, Lomax, who is certainly no stranger to the sin bin, will strive to make life as difficult as possible for his opposition when he takes to the ice in September. Also returning to the club, forward James Riddoch prepares to play another season at Blackburn Ice Arena. Having accumulated nineteen points for the Hawks last season, Riddoch will look to improve on this tally as his team targets the best possible league position from September, after achieving third place in the dying stages of their 2016-17 campaign.

Meanwhile, Scott McKenzie’s Dragons have once again secured the services of forward Andrew Chappell and defenceman Gavin Austin. An experienced forward, Chappell started out with Flintshire Flames in 2000 before progressing through the ranks of junior hockey to ice for the Freeze and then the rebranded Dragons from 2012. Though achieving just nine points from twenty seven games in what was a difficult season for his team, Chappell is one of his side’s longest serving players and is a welcome addition to his team’s roster. Likewise, versatile blue liner Austin is now in his sixth spell for The Dragons and played for the Freeze prior to the re-naming of the Deeside-based club. Missing out on only one game last season, Austin’s hard work and reliability in defence ensured that the Welsh outfit were able to compete against tough competition in the Moralee Conference to avoid automatic relegation. Amongst those who took to the ice to prevent their team’s relegation in their league placement playoff against Widnes Wild in April, Chappell and Austin now find themselves in the second tier of British Ice Hockey with some new opposition to look forward to as Sheffield Steeldogs, Hull Pirates and Telford Tigers One prepare to slot into the NIHL’s Division One.

In addition, Hull Pirates’ Head Coach Jason Hewitt has re-signed six players from last season’s squad as captain Jamie Chilcott and fellow defenceman Lee Haywood return alongside forwards Lee Bonner, Jordan Fisher, Josh Gent and Samuel Towner. Further to this, Sheffield Steeldogs have confirmed last season’s captain Ben Morgan as their new player-coach and already, he has acquired the signatures of youngster Aaron Jepson, forward Callum Brownley and defenceman Lewis Bell.

Lions to play in second tier of British Ice Hockey after pride’s surprise climb into NIHL North Division One

Heading into their twentieth season as a club, Nottingham Lions now look forward to their 2017-18 campaign with the knowledge that they will be playing in NIHL North’s Division One (Moralee) next season. Gaining promotion during the NIHL North section meeting, following the acceptance of Sutton Sting’s request for relegation, the Lions will prepare to face tough competition in Division One which will now be made up of last season’s Moralee contenders Billingham Stars, Blackburn Hawks, The Dragons, Solihull Barons, Solway Sharks and Whitley Warriors as well as former EPL outfits Hull Pirates, Sheffield Steeldogs and Telford Tigers One.

Starting out in the lower tiers of British Ice Hockey in 1998, the Lions were then able to progress to the English Premier League where they played for three seasons before switching to the ENL North . It was in this league that the Lions were able to contend with the best of their competition to qualify for playoffs in their first three seasons. Battling in their quest for silverware and enduring a sixth place finish in March 2007, Nottingham were able to bounce back to claim the English National League title in their 2007-08 campaign, though losing out on the double following defeat to league rivals Whitley Warriors. Securing second place for three consecutive seasons after their success, the Lions then plummeted to the depths of the ENL in 2012 to finish in eighth place and assume their spot in the league placement playoff game. An 11-8 defeat to Sutton Sting on aggregate saw the side relegated from Division One and, though winning nineteen of their twenty four games to achieve promotion in their following campaign, the club turned down a move back to Division One due to financial restraints. Now though, after fluctuating form in the NIHL’s Laidler Conference, the Lions have made the leap following their recent window of opportunity and consequently find themselves in the second tier of British Ice Hockey.

This move perhaps a surprise to many, The Cat’s Whiskers caught up with Nottingham’s Head Coach Matt Bradbury this week who took time to reflect on the Lions’ league change: “It was all about an opportunity that had arisen to make that step. There’s no doubt, looking at the teams and the standard, that we were really going to have to up the ante but sometimes you don’t get those chances very often and we just thought the most sensible thing to do was to take that opportunity, just like we did back when the Lions were in the EPL in 2000. The key then was to play at the highest level we possibly could and that opportunity arose because Sutton moved down into Division Two. I’m obviously aware that maybe other teams didn’t want to make that step but we knew that the number of games we were going to have to play, which was going to be thirty six, was the same and the amount of buses that we’d have to take was going to be of a similar amount and the same cost so why not take ourselves and be in the second tier of British Ice Hockey?

For me, I’ve always wanted to challenge the players from Nottingham, from within the junior system, and you always want to challenge yourself to be the best. There’s no point in going through the motions; if we’re going to do it, we may as well do it big. The players still pay to play so that means that they wear their hearts on their sleeves and it means something to them. They give it their all and that’s one side of the coin. The other side of the coin is that we will obviously be looking for players that may not have jobs or may not be picking up big pay cheques, or bigger pay cheques, in the NIHL1 because monies aren’t there to be had. We will be pulling together a group of players that know Nottingham and have come through Nottingham ranks and have played at that level. We need established players and we’re already in conversation with those types of players that we’re after. We’ll probably be looking for five or six players, just like other teams in the division. They will have their core base of players and it won’t be an auction because those teams don’t have the budgets either. They aren’t going to pay some of the wages that were being paid in the former EPL and we’ll be looking at players that are now working for a living, or on apprenticeships, or at college or university near us. We’ve got a list of who we’d like and if we can get those players that are on our wish list then we’ll be quite comfortable in the team we’ll put together.

“Ultimately, we had two choices: we could have played in the Division Two next season or we could make that push to the Division One. The costs would have been exactly the same. We’ve got targets. There’s certain teams and games that we’ll set to try and pick off points against and obviously it’s survival to not finish in the bottom two and be relegated. That will be the main aim and if we can pick off those extra points here and there, and make our home games count, then hopefully we could do even better than we probably expect ourselves. It would be great to finish middle of the pack and see where it takes us from there but it’s going to take some hard work and graft. The players are really excited to be getting this opportunity, nobody expected it, and it will hopefully spur us on into pulling together a strong team for next season.

Longstaff adds new face to Warriors’ roster

It has today been announced that Whitley Warriors have signed nineteen year old forward Adam Finlinson from Swindon Wildcats. Starting out at Hillheads in 2010 with the Northern Stars Under 16s team and Whitley Tomahawks, Finlinson progressed through the junior ranks at Whitley Bay Ice Rink before making the switch to Kingston Sharks in his 2013-14 campaign. Icing for Swindon Wildcats’ EPL and NIHL outfits, Finlinson also played fourteen games for the Okanagan Hockey Academy UK during which time he scored an outstanding thirty three goals and seventeen assists. Expected to be a real prospect for the Warriors, Finlinson will look to showcase his goal scoring prowess in his first senior season at Whitley Bay Ice Rink from September.

Speaking to NIHL Northern Trio about his switch from the Wildcats to Whitley, Finlinson shared: “I’m excited to join the Warriors as from a young age I used to watch them week in, week out. I’m looking forward to the new challenges ahead and to play with old team mates again. With the EPL teams dropping down to the NIHL, it was a no-brainer to sign for the Warriors as it’s my local team and where I came up through the ranks in my juniors.”

Adding to this, player-coach David Longstaff noted: “He’s a local lad and the only way we can get players like this is because he lives in the area. He’s a very good player and has a lot of talent.”

The NIHL season will commence on the first weekend of September and is scheduled to conclude on Saturday 7th Sunday 8th April 2018. Discussions around an NIHL North One Cup competition will continue and details of the playoff format for both NIHL North and South are set to be released on Tuesday.

Speaking to NIHL Northern Trio after this meeting, Solway Sharks’ Head Coach Martin Grubb shared: “I am really happy that the teams have finally agreed this new structure and I think it is a very positive move for everyone. It is going to be an exciting few months as teams look to recruit players and get ready for the league starting. I am sure the quality will again take a step in the right direction and the fans will see some great hockey. It’s great to have the new teams on board and we can now look forward to the season ahead.”

Adding to this, Billingham Stars’ Jack Watkins noted: “I think it’s good for British Ice Hockey that this is happening. I just hope that there isn’t too much of a divide between the top and bottom teams. It will force all teams to take a more professional and structured approach to the upcoming season. I look forward to it!”

Also reacting to the outcome of this meeting, Whitley Warriors’ player-coach David Longstaff observed: “I think it’s great for the fans. I expect there will be five teams battling for the top half of the league and I expect the league to be very up and down.”

Further to this, long-serving Warrior DJ Good commented: “My gut reaction is it is good for the league. It will raise the standard and it’s a nice thought to have the Warriors in the second tier. It has the potential so hopefully it will work out and the Warriors can adapt.”

Ross returns to Warriors roster

Photo Credit: IceHockeyMedia - Colin Lawson

After icing with Norwood Nemesis in the Canadian Premier Junior Hockey League last season, Whitley Warriors’ forward Kyle Hindmarsh-Ross has today confirmed that he will return to the Hillheads club, having made a smooth transition into Whitley’s senior team in their 2013-14 campaign. Offering both pace and skill to David Longstaff’s line-up, Hindmarsh-Ross contributed thirty three points in thirty nine games for the Nemesis and will aim to demonstrate this ability at Hillheads next season. Reflecting on his recent campaign away from the NIHL and looking to the future, Hindmarsh-Ross took time to note: “I found Canada was a great experience and a lot more physical than I was expecting. The off-ice sessions were good and they were all about helping you improve on the ice. I’m looking forward to putting a Whitley shirt on again. I learnt a lot last time I was there from Lobby [Longstaff] and Dave [Holland]. They will keep helping me to improve.”

Netminder Lawson set for seventh season at Hillheads

It was announced yesterday that Warriors’ netminder Richie Lawson will take to his usual post between the pipes for Whitley’s 2017-18 campaign. Having completed his sixth season with the club in March as the team’s first choice shot stopper, Lawson achieved a save percentage of 89.2% and will now look ahead to bettering this feat in his next campaign.

Kindly taking the time to discuss his pre-season preparations and his hopes for Whitley Warriors next season, Lawson told NIHL Northern Trio: “Last season was a difficult campaign for us with lots of ups and plenty of downs for various reasons. On a personal level, I wasn’t happy with my own performance over the stretch of the season either. I know I’ve got an awful lot more to offer the team than what I did last year. Speaking as an individual, my goal is, at an absolute minimum, to give my team a chance to win every night regardless of which league we are playing in. The competition could be incredibly tough depending on how things transpire and in what direction management and the club want to travel. Consistency in performance will be key so my off-season preparations have to be much more professional than they were last year to best prepare myself for the upcoming campaign. It’s too difficult to set a team goal at this early stage but it does go without saying that I’d love to be competing for top places and a chance to compete in the playoffs. A lot depends on the structure of the league, the financial investment from owners and what team Lobby [David Longstaff] and Dave [Holland] can physically afford to put together to best compete. There are too many external and internal factors to weigh up right now. It wouldn’t be British Ice Hockey without a bit of controversy though…you’ve just got to enjoy the ride!”
